Rockne Freitas’ name is expected to go before the University of Hawaii Board of Regents next week as a candidate for the chancellor at UH-West Oahu, according to Capitol sources.
The board is scheduled to meet Feb. 21 at UH Hilo.
Freitas and UH officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Gene Awakuni, who has been chancellor at West Oahu since March 2005, retires at the end of the current academic year.
Freitas, 67, has been vice president for student affairs and university/community relations for the UH system since 2010. He held that position while also serving as acting athletic director from July 13 to Jan. 13 before Ben Jay took over.
Freitas’ UH biography said he has also worked "on key special projects systemwide, including the completion of the community college in Palamanui and assisting with the progress of the new West Oahu campus."
Previously he was chancellor of Hawaii Community College for six years.
Awakuni’s salary was $211,000.
