The DC Comics Universe is expanding to include Hawaii for the launch of the “Justice League of America” title, available in comic book stores starting Wednesday.
Besides a base cover that will include the superheroes hoisting a U.S. flag in an Iwo Jima pose, each state, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, will receive its own version of a special variant cover with its own flag being raised. The cover price is $3.99.
“It’s going to be the biggest comic book of the year,” said Ted Mays, owner of Gecko Books & Comics in Kaimuki. “We’ve already had orders for those willing to spend around $150 for all 53 covers” as part of a special package deal.
“Justice League of America” will be a sister title to “Justice League,” which was the flagship title of DC Comics’ “The New 52” title launch that began in August 2011. While “Justice League” has all the big names such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, “Justice League of America” will be a U.S. military-formed team made up of superheroes such as Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Hawkman and Catwoman.
Given the title of the comic and the fact it was announced in 2012, an election year, DC Comics said it wanted to celebrate the country and the 50 states.
The Hawaii-cover comic book will be available at Gecko Books, 1151 12th Ave. (732-1292); Collector Maniacs, 3571 Waialae Ave. (739-3912); Jelly’s, 98-023 Hekaha St. No. 9 (484-4413) and 670 Auahi St. (587-7001); and Other Realms in Ward Warehouse, 1050 Ala Moana Blvd. (596-8236).
