American Samoa’s newly elected governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, will make his first official visit to Hawaii today before heading to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and other government officials.
Moliga was scheduled to arrive at 5:45 a.m. and will spend two days resting and meeting informally with the local Samoan community before leaving for Washington on Thursday, said Afimutasi Gus Hannemann, director of the American Samoa Government Hawaii Office.
"One of the things we really want is to maintain a good relationship with the federal government," Hannemann said.
Hannemann said Moliga, who won a runoff election in November against then-Lt. Gov. Faoa Aitofele Sunia, hopes to meet with Hawaii’s congressional delegation in Washington.
After a week in Washington, Moliga will return to Hawaii to meet with local government officials and representatives of federal agencies here. Hannemann said he will try to arrange for Moliga to meet with Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.
Hannemann said Moliga will address a variety of issues during his trip, including the economy, business and technology.
"It’s looking at things like creating interest for companies and people to do business in American Samoa and bringing new technology to Samoa," Hannemann said.
Moliga will return to American Samoa on March 7.
