Search to resume for missing Navy SEAL
The Coast Guard, Navy and Honolulu Fire Department are expected to continue the search today for a Navy SEAL who was reported missing after ocean swim training near Kaena Point.
The sailor became separated from other members of his command during the training Tuesday afternoon.
The Navy said the missing man, 34, is a first class petty officer assigned to a Hawaii-based special-warfare unit.
Navy officials would not name the SEAL or his unit. SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 is the main unit for the commandos in Hawaii, with about 100 SEALs.
The Navy said 10 sailors were training using two rigid-hull inflatable boats.
An MH-65 dolphin helicopter crew out of Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point and a Coast Guard response boat were diverted from a training exercise at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to begin searching the area.
The Fire Department Air 1 helicopter and firefighters on land searched the sea and shoreline until nightfall. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane crew joined the search at 1 a.m. Wednesday.
