1 in 4 isle residents receiving assistance also had disability
About one-fourth of Hawaii residents receiving income-based government assistance had one or more types of disability in 2011, according to a Census Bureau brief released Tuesday.
The report aimed to better understand the population of Americans who receive income-based assistance, which includes everything from food stamps to cash payments to Medicaid.
Nationally, 30 percent of recipients of government assistance had a disability.
Arizona had the lowest disability rate among its population of residents who received income-based assistance, at 25.1 percent. (Hawaii came in a hair above Arizona, with 25.2 percent.) The highest percentage, 41.7 percent, was found in West Virginia.
Man charged after drugs, guns are found
Hawaii County police have charged a Waikoloa man with multiple drug and weapon violations following his arrest at his home last weekend.
Paul Solis Sr., 46, was charged with methamphetamine trafficking, promoting a detrimental drug, two counts of promoting a dangerous drug, two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and four firearm offenses.
His bail was set at $36,750. He was released from custody Saturday evening after posting bail.
Police said Solis was arrested Friday at his home in the 68-1600 block of Alana Street. During a search of his house, police recovered 13.5 grams of methamphetamine, 0.5 grams of marijuana, two handguns and various drug-related paraphernalia. Police also seized $8,852 in cash and two flat-screen televisions for forfeiture.
Two women, age 24 and 20, also were arrested Friday. They were released pending further investigation.
Repairs close Waha bridge till end of week
The Waha Road Bridge in Kalaheo will be closed this week while crews make repairs, Kauai County announced Tuesday. Work began Tuesday and is expected to be completed by the end of the week. The project includes replacing the wood decking.
During the closure, motorists will need to use alternate routes. For more information, call the county Roads Division at 241-4847.
In a related matter, the county Public Works Department will hold a community meeting on the Hanapepe Town Bridge project March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center.
