It turns out a change in scenery brought more of the same.
The Hawaii baseball team matched its worst start in school history, getting just two hits in a 9-0 loss to Loyola Marymount on Thursday in the first game of the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.
The Rainbows are 0-9 for the first time since 1933 and were shut out for the fourth time in nine games.
Hawaii has failed to score in 54 of the past 56 innings and is 2-for-40 with runners in scoring position in its past five games.
"We’re stuck in groundhog day right now offensively," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said in a telephone interview. "We’re capable of having a game like that get away from us when we’re not hitting the way we are and then if you go out there and don’t get a good pitching performance, it can get ugly."
Kaeo Aliviado doubled and had both of UH’s hits off LMU sophomore Colin Welmon (2-1), who faced only one batter over the minimum.
Aliviado doubled to lead off the seventh but failed to advance as Welmon retired three straight UH pinch hitters.
He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.
"He was solid, a lot of it goes to him," Trapasso said. "But I don’t care if you’re a first-round pick, you’ve got to get more than two hits."
LMU (4-5) jumped on UH starter Scott Squier, who allowed the first four Lions to reach base to start the game.
Cullen Mahoney hit an RBI triple and Matt Lowenstein followed with a run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead.
Squier needed nearly 60 pitches to get through the first two innings. He was chased with two outs in the sixth after giving up a two-run double to Zac Fujimoto and a walk.
In 5 2⁄3 innings, Squier allowed five runs on six hits with three walks.
"When you’re having to be perfect it just puts too much pressure on you," Trapasso said. "The tough thing is Squier was on the verge of having one of those games that you could really point to later in the year to be one of those turning-point games.
"Outside of the double — which was probably the best at-bat we’ve seen all year — they didn’t hit a ball hard the whole (first) inning and then he gets us into the sixth inning but it was pretty apparent we weren’t going to score enough once Fujimoto’s double put (the lead) to five."
Fujimoto, a 2008 Maryknoll graduate, finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lowenstein and Colton Plaia each had three hits.
LMU blew the game open with eight hits and four runs off UH reliever Scott Kuzminsky, who pitched the final 3 1⁄3 innings.
UH senior Connor Little (0-2, 3.29) will start today’s game against Bradley at noon. The Braves entered the tournament with a 7.20 team ERA.
