Search ends for man swept out to sea
Kauai County suspended its search Wednesday for a male tourist from Singapore who was swept to sea while walking on a remote north Kauai shoreline Monday.
Phua Chuan Chin, 62, is reported as Kauai’s ninth drowning victim in 2013, the county said. Seven were tourists.
A large wave swept Chin and a 47-year-old Ohio man from the rocky shoreline along Kalihiwai Point, just east of Kalihiwai Bay on the North Shore. The Ohio man swam to shore and was treated for minor injuries.
Kauai rescue personnel and the Coast Guard searched for Chin with boats and helicopters, as well as on shore. The Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred during a high surf advisory that was posted for north and west shores.
