KAKUNO’S ‘IN THE HEIGHTS’ IS A HIT Director Kyle Kakuno, center, celebrated with cast members Kiloni Ramo (Nina), Poasa Aga (Benny), Patrick O’Toole (Usnavi De La Vega) and Kaena Kekoa (Vanessa) after the “Drama Gala” opening of the Saint Louis Center for the Arts production of “In the Heights” March 2 at Mamiya Theatre. The beautifully staged show is Kakuno’s final production as director of the arts program and also the first time any island theater group has presented the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical. 2. Guest choreographer Ramon Del Barrio, center, shared a table with Drew Tandal, left, Jonah Ho‘okano, Tracy Larrua and Keo Woolford at the gala dinner before the show. Del Barrio’s choreography of the talented ensemble adds drama to the big-scale song-and-dance numbers that drive key moments in the show, which runs through Saturday. For ticket information, call 739-4896 or email tickets@mamiyatheatre.com.

BEAUTIFUL BENEFIT FOR MIRACLES There were tiaras galore when Miss Kahala 2013 Andrea Iwalani Kualii-Kahoohanohano, left, and Miss East Oahu 2013 Joleen Iwaniec, right, welcomed Michelle Choy, second from left, 2013 Narcissus Queen Diana Chao and pageant consultant Leilani Keough to a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network on March 3 at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Kualii-Kahoohanohano stepped forward to entertain the crowd with beautiful renditions of “Ku‘u Milimili” and “Kapekepeke” — singing the Hawaiian lyrics and playing ukulele — while dessert was being served.

RIETVELD ROCKS IN SANTANA SELL-OUT Expatriate islander Benny Rietveld, standing center, bassist and musical director for Carlos Santana, caught up backstage with longtime friends Noel and Liane Okimoto, left front, his mother, Annie Bourque, seated, and his niece, Jessica Bourque, after Santana’s sold-out concert Feb. 26 in Blaisdell Arena. Rietveld added a touch of Hawaii to the show when he played “Waimanalo Blues” as a bass solo. For my review, see www.honolulupulse.com.
