As long as the Waipahu baseball team has Dylan Sugimoto on the hill, the OIA Red will be no problem.
Justin Padilla squeezed home Sugimoto and the reigning Division II state champions beat annual contender Pearl City 3-2 in eight innings at Waipahu on Saturday. The Marauders were coming off a 9-1 loss to Campbell and wanted to atone for their performance.
"I’ve never seen my team play like this," Sugimoto said. "It’s something good; coming off that game against Campbell that was an eye opener and we wanted to play well against a good team."
The Marauders, who fought back to tie it in the sixth and seventh innings, made the extra frame look easy. Waipahu never hit the ball out of the infield against Pearl City closer Tanner Tokunaga, getting a five-pitch walk by Sugimoto to lead it off, followed by a bunt by Tyler Enos to attempt to advance him to second. None of the Chargers touched the ball before Enos sped down the line to put runners on first and second. Tokunaga then walked Joshua Maglangit to load the bases with no outs.
Sugimoto, who left for a courtesy runner when he reached first base because of an earlier cramp, pulled his helmet back on and took third base along with a little secret.
Coaches told Sugimoto that Padilla was going to attempt to squeeze on the first pitch, and Sugimoto motored down the line when Tokunaga released the ball. Padilla got a fastball down the middle and deposited it down the third-base line to win the game.
"At first I was nervous," Padilla said. "In my mind I was thinking ‘My pitcher went out there and threw a hell of a game, so I have to do this for him,’ but then confidence overcame nervousness."
Padilla made a winner of Sugimoto, who gave up 10 hits but had Pearl City fighting for everything it wanted. Sugimoto threw 119 pitches and endured a rain delay that put him on the shelf for 10 minutes in the fifth inning and a cramp that put him on his rear on the mound for another five minutes.
"That shows that he’s got some guts," Pearl City coach Mitchell Yamato said. "That’s the two worst things for a pitcher, a rain delay and cramps, but he’s got heart. He pitched a hell of a game and we hit him well, just not enough."
Pearl City left at least one runner on base in each of the first seven innings before Sugimoto set them down in order in the eighth. Still, Waipahu couldn’t touch Pearl City starter Dane Kaneshiro. The righty pitched five scoreless innings and allowed only two hits before departing after the rain delay with a 1-0 lead.
The Chargers got that lead in the top of the fifth when Matthew Tsutomi drove in Tokunaga with a single, but Sugimoto got Kamalu Neal to ground to short and strand runners on the corners.
Waipahu finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth on Padilla’s RBI single, but Pearl City reliever Sean Milan forced Fuentes to ground into a double play with the bases loaded.
The Chargers went ahead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to center by Tsutomi, but the Marauders tied it when Matapua Tuafale scored on an error by Pearl City second baseman Brent Clymer.
The Chargers (2-1) host Mililani on Wednesday, while the Marauders (2-1) visit Aiea the same day.
"We always tell the kids, when Dylan is on the mound we are always in the game," Waipahu coach Milton Takenaka said. "We just have to execute and everybody else has to do their part and we will be fine."
