A trial date has been set for former state Rep. Roland Sagum III, accused of stealing rocks from a heiau on Kauai.
The trial has been scheduled for July 15 before Judge Kathleen Watanabe at Kauai Circuit Court.
Sagum is charged with second-degree theft for allegedly taking rocks from a heiau in Poipu. The offense is considered a Class C felony that carries a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Sagum’s attorney, Craig De Costa, has filed a motion to dismiss the charge. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for April 16.
Lealiki Koli, the second man charged in the rock theft, turned himself in to police last week and was released after he posted bail of $2,000. He was charged with second-degree theft and second-degree criminal property damage. Koli is reportedly the contractor who used heavy equipment to take rocks from the heiau in 2011 to build a rock wall at Sagum’s property.
Koli is scheduled to be arraigned March 19.
Sagum, 58, represented state House District 16 (Poipu-Niihau) from 2006 to 2010, when he was defeated in the Democratic primary by Dee Morikawa.
