Warrant issued in alleged assault attempt
City prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a 35-year-old Kalihi Valley man hospitalized after he was shot by a police officer last week in a confrontation at the family’s home.
The warrant is for an attempted-assault charge. Ralph Riveira Jr. remains at the Queen’s Medical Center, where he is recuperating from his wounds. He will be arraigned as soon as he recovers.
However, prosecutors declined to press charges against his mother, Nadeen Lane, who also was arrested Friday for terroristic threatening.
On Friday, police said, Riveira was fighting with Lane on the front lawn of her Machado Street home when the first officer arrived. Riveira approached the officer, holding a foot-long metal stake overhead, at which point the patrolman fired at him several times, police said.
The officer who fired the shots, a 24-year veteran assigned to the Kalihi station, was placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice after a police shooting. The department initiated an internal-affairs investigation.
Inmate found dead in apparent suicide
Prison authorities are investigating an apparent suicide that happened Monday at Halawa Correctional Facility’s special holding unit.
The medical examiner has been called in to determine how 32-year-old Jonathan Ibana died at the facility. He was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. Monday.
Ibana, who was serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree attempted murder, was found at 4:09 p.m. in his cell.
Honolulu police and the state Public Safety Department’s internal affairs office are conducting an investigation.
Ibana’s death is the second this week at an Oahu prison.
Cyril Chung, also known as Cyrl Chung, was beaten to death by another inmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center on Saturday.
