The American Diabetes Association celebrates the 14th Annual Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes on Saturday. Join in with family and friends to support the fight against diabetes.
The walk begins with registration at 7 a.m. at Kapiolani Park. Call the American Diabetes Association at 947-5979 or see www.diabetes.org/stepouthawaii. Enjoy refreshments, entertainment and such activities as a health fair and keiki tent.

ASIAN PORK SLIDERS
1-1/2 pounds coarsely ground pork (96 percent lean)
1-inch fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
1 large clove garlic, peeled and finely grated
1 stalk green onion, trimmed and minced
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons dark sesame oil
1 teaspoon cornstarch
6 whole-wheat hamburger buns
Spicy Asian Slaw (see recipe below)
Sriracha (Thai hot sauce, available in the Asian section of supermarkets)
In medium bowl, mix pork, ginger, garlic, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil and cornstarch. Shape into 6 patties.
In nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook pork patties to medium doneness (golden on both sides), about 7 minutes total.
Serve on whole-wheat bun, topped with Spicy Asian Slaw and sriracha, if using. Serves 6.

SPICY ASIAN SLAW
2 cups loosely packed shredded red cabbage
3/4 cup fresh (or thawed frozen) snow peas, cut diagonally into 1-inch pieces
1/2 cup frozen shelled edamame, thawed
1/2 cup diced red onion
1/2 cup red bell pepper, cut into thin strips, then into 2-inch pieces
1/3 cup slivered almonds, toasted
» Vinaigrette:
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar substitute
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
In medium bowl, combine salad ingredients.
In small jar, combine vinaigrette ingredients, tighten lid and shake vigorously until well blended.
When serving, pour vinaigrette over salad and toss gently until well incorporated. Serves 6.
