The Hawaii baseball team snapped an 11-game losing streak at home on the arm of junior Matt Cooper, who tossed the Rainbows’ first nine-inning shutout in three years in a 2-0 victory over Gonzaga on Tuesday night.

Cooper faced three batters more than the minimum and walked none as Gonzaga (9-5-1) had its streak of six games without a loss end in front of a crowd of 928.

"Especially after the game last night, we’ve been so close in a lot of games that it feels really good to pull that one out," said Cooper, who struck out three.

The win comes on the heels of Mike Trapasso’s postgame tirade after the Rainbows blew a ninth-inning lead and lost 3-1 to the Bulldogs in 12 innings on Monday night.

Hawaii responded with 10 hits, including three from the suddenly hot Marc Flores.

"The energy that our guys came out with tonight was something that I was really wondering about coming to the park today," Trapasso said. "(Monday) was the toughest loss I’ve ever had because of the culmination of everything and it lets us go into this break with a good feeling."

At 2-15, it’s been as frustrating a month as any in Trapasso’s 12-year tenure.

Things came to a boiling point after Monday’s loss in which Trapasso berated his team after it scored just one run for the fourth straight game.

"It was a snowball effect of things I’ve never seen before and playing the early schedule we did, guys got it shoved up their rear end by really good pitching and boy, that bubble burst quick," Trapasso said. "After that 17-inning shutout (against Rice), our guys haven’t been the same since and that’s what we’ve talked about. We can’t be that fragile."

With Tuesday’s win, Hawaii can take something positive into its longest break of the season.

The Rainbows have seven days off before their final nonconference series of the year at home against Wichita State next week.

Hawaii opens its inaugural season in the Big West a week after that against UC Santa Barbara.

"Conference is what means a lot," said Flores, who was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. "We can still accomplish a lot this year and we know that. We’re still fighting, coming out here, trying to get the win."

Flores has two doubles and a homer among his five hits over the last two games.

After failing to convert on one-out doubles in each of the first two innings, Hawaii got to Gonzaga starter Billy Moon in the third.

Austin Wobrock led off with a bunt single that caused a throwing error by Moon that allowed Wobrock to move all the way to third.

Stephen Ventimilia followed with an infield single off the glove of Marco Gonzales at first to drive in the first run.

Pi‘ikea Kitamura reached on his second hit of the game and the Rainbows loaded the bases on an intentional walk to Jerry Kleman after Adam Hurley’s sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third.

Flores worked a 3-2 count before lacing a single to second to score Ventimilia and end Moon’s day after 21⁄3 innings.

"He was throwing me curveball, curveball, curveball, so I was sitting offspeed and he threw me that nice little fastball," Flores said. "I was like, ‘Thank you,’ and just took it the other way."

Righty Arturo Reyes replaced Moon and escaped further damage by getting Conner George to ground into a double play.

Hawaii failed to score with runners on second and third and nobody out in the sixth, but Cooper didn’t let it faze him.

After hitting Brock Slavin with a pitch, Cooper retired 13 in a row before Mitchell Gunsolus’ one-out double in the ninth.

Cooper finished the game by getting Clayton Eslick to fly out to left on his 120th pitch.

"I didn’t worry about the runner at all because even if he scores it’s still a one-run lead," Cooper said. "I focused on each pitch and got the guys to fly out."
