Ahuna wins at weightlifting nationals
Dominic Ahuna, the strength and conditioning coach at ‘Iolani School, won his age group at last weekend’s USA Weightlifting Masters National Championship in Moorestown, N.J.
Ahuna, 38, had a combined total of 300 pounds in the snatch and clean and jerk, winning his 35s group at 105-plus kg by 12 pounds over Brian Edgerton. Ahuna was also named the best lifter in his class. He will be a member of Team USA at the World Games this August in Torino, Italy.
World paddleboard registration opens
Registration for the 17th Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championships on July 28 opens today.
The international event is expected to sell out well in advance of the July 1 deadline. The 32-mile race crosses the Ka‘iwi Channel from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Maunalua Bay, Oahu.

State junior boxing this weekend
Boxers from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Hawaii island will vie for a chance to compete at the national championships at the Hawaii State Junior Olympic Boxing Championships Saturday and Sunday at Palolo District Park gym
Winners in the 15- and 16-year-old divisions will advance to the USA Boxing Junior Olympic Championships, June 25-29 in Mobile, Ala. Boxers eight through 14 will earn state titles.

Hawaii Masters Series debuts
A new Hawaii Masters Series debuts later this month, with the first of four events starting March 22 at Diamond Head Tennis Center.
All tournaments will be conducted by the U.S. Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Section and Hawaii Pacific Tennis Foundation. The series will determine the best players in 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s age groups for men’s and women’s singles and doubles. Results count for adult age-group rankings with players earning points for each round won en route to being named the "Master" of their specific age group.
The spring series is March 22-24. Entry deadline is Sunday.
Other tournaments are: summer, June 13-16, entry deadline June 7; fall, Oct. 4-6, entry deadline Sept. 29; and winter, Dec. 27-29, entry deadline Dec. 22.

Waterman Hall nominations open
Nominations are being sought for the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame, which will hold its induction banquet on Aug. 22. Informational packets are available online at DukeFoundation.org. The deadline is April 7.
The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation established the hall three years ago to honor the accomplishments of Hawaii’s legendary watermen and water women.
Pool players qualify for national tourney
Eight pool players from the Oahu Amateur Poolplayers Association qualified for next month’s APA competitions in Las Vegas through tournaments earlier this month at Hawaiian Brian’s Billiards.
Advancing to the 8-Ball Classic are Frances "Honey" Reyes, Pat Mohan, Mark Mitchell and Steven Weakly. Weakly also qualified for the 9-Ball Shootout along with Karl Ernst and Jon Montgomery. Jon Stevens and Sophina Placencia will compete in the Jack & Jill Championship.

Top-ranked billiards player at clinic
The Oahu APA is hosting Allison Fisher, ranked No. 1 in the Women’s Professional Billiards Association, March 24 at TJ’s Sports Bar and Grill.
Fisher will hold a fundamental skills clinic, show off trick shots and take on challengers wanting to test their game against the pro. Presale tickets are $35 for the event that runs from 5 to 7 p.m.; tickets are $45 at the door.
