There is only one small difference between the Pearl City and Campbell baseball teams, but it is big enough.
The Sabers can’t lose and the Chargers just can’t seem to win.
Brannon Okinaka stole second base and didn’t stop until he scored to give No. 3 Campbell a 3-2 win over No. 9 Pearl City in 11 innings at Campbell on Saturday. The Sabers improved to 5-0 while the Chargers dropped their third in a row, two of them in extra innings, to fall to 2-3.
"Right now we are finding ways to squeak by," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "There is good and bad with that; it’s easy to get these guys to continue to work hard and get where we want to get, but we do want to hit better."
Pearl City closer Tanner Tokunaga jammed Okinaka with a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but Okinaka, Campbell’s No. 9 hitter, got the handle of the bat on it and flared it to right field. The wind was blowing in just enough for it to settle in front of Pearl City’s right fielder. It was Okinaka’s first hit in five trips to the plate.
But there was no panic on Pearl City’s side because Tokunaga was dealing. He had allowed one single before that in his two innings, and got a quick strike on Campbell’s Raymond Pedrina when Pico ordered Okinaka to steal.
"We were just trying to make something happen," Pico said. "One thing led to another and we took a chance and it made a difference."
Okinaka didn’t get the best of jumps off first but made up for it with his speed to go into his head-first slide into second as the throw reached the bag. The ball deflected off Okinaka’s arm and into short left field. He popped up and saw three Chargers chase the ball and took off for third. He slid into the base and watched the throw from left skip up the line toward the backstop and obeyed Pico’s order to head for the plate immediately. Okinaka took an inside line to the plate and just got his right hand on the dish before the tag to set off a scrum while the Chargers stood in shocked silence.
