The Mililani softball team isn’t sure what happened to its offense, but the Trojans sure hope it continues.
Mililani stayed undefeated with an 18-4 road win over Waipahu on Thursday. The Trojans beat Waipahu 3-1 in their first meeting on March 2, but haven’t scored fewer than six runs in any of their five games since. Mililani is 8-0, while Waipahu fell to 4-4.
“We worked on hitting a lot these past few practices,” Mililani pitcher Joen Baker said. “I guess we are just making good contact and hitting it. We are just on it.”
Baker, Mililani’s cleanup hitter, had three RBI singles and a walk to lead the team in hits. Karly Macadangdang hit a home run in the third, and Nicole Cox added a grand slam in the fourth. Mililani got hits from 11 different players and pounded out 17 hits to go with the eight walks it drew.
“Every time they came up they hit the ball,” Waipahu coach Funa Kapihe said. “What can I say?”
The Trojans began the game with two runs in the first when Waipahu pitcher Tali Viliamu walked the first two batters and Kacie Oshiro singled. Kylie Bello then walked to bring home a run, and Macadangdang flew out to centerfield for another run before Viliamu got out of the jam. Mililani scored two more in the third on a leadoff walk by Baker and Macadangdang’s long home run to left field.
Then came the top of the fourth. Viliamu had thrown 83 pitches through three innings and was chased when she reached 100 after the first four batters reached in the inning on two singles and two errors.
Kayla Pedebone came in for her and took more punishment, and by the time the inning was over, Mililani had scored 11 runs on eight hits.
Waipahu answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth but Mililani trumped the Marauders with three in the top of the fifth.
Waipahu scored twice in the bottom of the fifth before Mililani caught Lauren Takanuu trying to tag up from first to second on a fly to centerfield to end the game via the mercy rule. It was Mililani’s third win by double figures this season.
Waipahu has given up 29 runs in its past two games after allowing only 15 in its six games prior.
“Last time was a much tighter game,” Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. “This time the kids were focused with their hitting, they swung at good pitches today.”
Baker held Waipahu scoreless for the first three innings and slipped up a little bit when her team had a 15-2 cushion, giving up a pair of home runs. She pitched to contact and cruised to the win.
“It’s always difficult to throw to Waipahu,” Baker said. “They are a good hitting team, but if I hit my spots and they hit it, then they hit it.”
