Record times for Mau at sectionals
Jasmine Mau won two events in record time, leading Kamehameha Swim Club to an overall eighth-place finish at last weekend’s Speedo Northwest Senior Sectional Championship in Federal Way, Wash.
KSC’s boys finished sixth overall, the girls eighth; combining for the overall finish, the highest for a Hawaii team in this event. Mau became the first KSC swimmer to win two individual events in the same sectional competition.
Mau set a sectional championship record when winning the women’s 100 fly in 52.77, and also won the women’s 50 free in 22.70 seconds, setting Hawaiian age-group and open marks for the event. The Punahou School junior also finished second to Olympian Missy Franklin (47.28) in the 100 free with a 49.04, once again setting Hawaiian age-group and open marks. She was second in the 200 fly.
Also, the KSC boys 800-free relay team of Austin Hirstein, Ryan Stack, Jake Urbano and Kale Ai finished second overall in 6:42.93, less than a second off the sectional record. Kevin Frifeldt broke the 15-16 boys Hawaiian record with an eighth-place finish in the men’s 100 free with a 45.20.
Baxter wins tiebreaker in Chile
Connor Baxter edged fellow Maui native Kai Lenny in the tie-breaker race at last week’s Aragas Magallanes Paddle Challenge in Chile, the opener of the Stand Up World Series.
Lenny won the long-distance race last Friday in the Patagonia region, finishing ahead of Baxter, Casper Steinfath of Denmark and Australia’s Zane Schweitzer. The top two reversed their order in Saturday’s sprint course; Baxter first and Lenny second.
The overall title was decided on the final stretch of the tiebreaker course in Puerto Natales, with Baxter edging Lenny, the reigning World Series champion. Baxter earned $9,000.
Baxter and Lenny share the No. 1 world ranking heading into the Abu Dhabi Surf & Paddle All-Stars Invitational April 4-7.
Dolan on track for Waterman title
Patrick Dolan edged Zsolt Szadobszki by four minutes to win the open surf ski division at Sunday’s Maui Jim Oahu Championships, the penultimate event of the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association season.
Dolan is poised to claim the inaugural Waterman’s Series title, which is used to determine the best all-around waterman and water woman using four designated disciplines during the Kanaka Ikaika season: prone paddleboard, stand-up paddleboard, surf ski and OC-1.
In the Oahu Championships last Sunday, Dolan finished the 16-mile long course from Rabbit Island to Kaimana Beach in 1 hour, 52 minutes and 30 seconds. Szadobszki, previously undefeated in the surf ski division, finished in 1:56:54. The top OC-1 paddler was Manny Kulukulualani (2:06:13) with Billy Lawson second (2:08:56).
Rachel Bruntsch, in the lead for the Waterwomen’s title, won Sunday’s surfki division in 2:36:15. Lindsey Shank was the first female OC-1 finisher in 2:23:40.
Sunday’s short course winners were: Kulani Ryan, men’s OC-1, 1:34:51; Kalei Kaleoaloha, men’s surf ski, 1:38:34. Christine Pogue, women’s OC-1, 1:49:26; Kolaiah Jardine, stock paddleboard, 1:46:46; Tillotson Govi, prone paddleboard, 1:49:16; and SUP competitors Jennifer Fratzke, 1:53:58 and Kjell Van Sice, 1:55:59.
The state championship long course is 20 miles, starting at Makai Pier, circling Rabbit Island and finishing at Magic Island. The short course is 9 miles and runs from Maunalua Bay to Magic Island.
