Kids learn dramatic skills at Aaron Pughes’ Youth Improv Learning Experience, but they also learn life skills such as listening, trust, creativity and confidence.

The interactive classes, led by Larissa Nielsen, begin with warm-up exercises that allow everyone to get comfortable in the class. Activities can range from voice games, like speaking in different accents, to movement drills that explore various styles of dances, Pughes said. The session is open to ages 8 to 16.

Pughes handles the administration side of operations, while Nielsen, who is a founding member of In Your Face Improv and a member of the Laughtrack Theater Co., teaches the classes.

Class sizes are limited to ensure participants have plenty of opportunities to participate. "Hiding in the corner isn’t an option," Pughes said.

"I’ve seen the shy kid in the corner become the anchor in a game, the kid who was bouncing off the walls calmly wait for the perfect moment to deliver the golden line, and the kid with a constant frown never stop smiling the entire class," he said. "I want them to walk away feeling confident in themselves, happy and seeing a mistake as an opportunity to learn."
