The 921-foot cruise ship Pride of America is in the Pearl Harbor shipyard for two weeks for more than $30 million in renovation work, officials said.

BAE Systems Hawaii Shipyards is doing the work in Dry Dock 4. The 2,124-passenger ship is getting 24 new luxury suites, four studio staterooms, a Brazilian-style steakhouse restaurant, new carpets, flat-panel TVs and other upgrades, Norwegian Cruise Line said in September.

When Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America entered the shipyard for work  in 2010, the Navy said it was the largest privately owned ship to be dry-docked at Pearl Harbor.

Federal law permits a Defense Department industrial facility to make underused assets like the dry dock available to a private company to conduct commercial work that is compatible with the mission of the government activity.

Pearl Harbor’s dry dock is the only facility in Hawaii large enough to handle the cruise ship, so the use of Dry Dock 4 does not compete with local dry dock capacity, the Navy said.
