The Moanalua volleyball team did its part to get its visitors home safely.
With the public address announcer reminding fans of a flash flood warning on Oahu, Na Menehune quickly swept Kailua and Farrington at home on Tuesday to run their record to 5-1.
Moanalua got its senior night under way with a 25-7, 25-20 win over Kailua, then dispatched Farrington 25-7, 25-12. Senior Tahiarri Caldwell led the way for Na Menehune with 12 kills combined, while freshman Austin Matautia added eight despite serving as a line judge in the second set of the win over Kailua.
“They are a lot more skilled than we are,” Farrington coach Reagan Agena said. “We are still learning the game. At every position playing club, as far as volleyball IQ, you can’t beat that.”
While the Governors and Surfriders looked to be working things out, Moanalua seemed to be in midseason form. Na Menehune served up 18 aces on Tuesday and were only victimized by an opponent’s serve three times. They had five service errors.
“The kids executed, so they did well,” Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting said. “We have been working hard on getting the serve a little bit tougher. We struggled with it early in the season, so now we are going after areas a little bit more.”
Moanalua may have had some kinks, but Farrington had a few more. Moanalua broke the match open in the first set, when Farrington had three net violations and a lift on successive plays. The Governors were whistled for eight violations to go with their eight hitting errors.
The Governors beat the Surfriders 25-23, 25-21 to take the middle match of the triangular.
The Governors were down to Kailua 14-8 in the second set of their first match when Agena called a timeout to make his boys run hard sprints across their side of the court for 40 seconds. It worked, though, as they scored four straight points and eventually tied Kailua at 19-all before pulling away on three straight aces by Tyler Liana. Marco Rey Cudia led Farrington with eight kills and Kekoa Ford led Kailua with five.
“We just came out really flat and it was a bad representation of what we can do,” Agena said. “I’m not sure what happened. We might have left their brains back at the school and we needed to get some motivation from somewhere. We are getting better and kind of OK with where we are at. We just want to perform better.”
The Governors improved to 6-3, while Kailua fell to 0-4. Having half of its team play on the basketball squad didn’t help, as Kailua coach Cheriesse Shiroma spent the majority of both matches reminding her boys of basic fundamentals and imploring them to get fired up.
“When they get on the court, I think it is a confidence thing,” Shiroma said. “Every set they got better and better and I think their true image shined, but still it’s not where they should be. A lot of them, it is their first time playing volleyball and I see improvements every day.”
