State reopens park and trail
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources reopened Kauai’s Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and the Kalalau Trail on Friday following an assessment that morning of the trail’s condition.
Officials closed the wilderness area after heavy rain Wednesday. Kauai firefighters rescued 12 hikers who were stranded in Hanakapiai Valley when stream waters rose and ran fast. They also warned three other people who were about to attempt a stream crossing.
Nearly 22 inches of rain fell Wednesday at Kilohana, near Hanalei, from 2 p.m. Monday to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The state Division of State Parks reminds the public that weather conditions can suddenly change and hikers should be prepared to take safety precautions, including keeping to high ground and finding a safe place to wait out a storm.
