First the No. 1 team in Hawaii.

Then rival ‘Iolani.

Then the defending California state champion.

It’s been quite the week for the second-ranked Punahou boys volleyball team.

Led by Micah Ma‘a, Tui Tuileta, Kupono Fey and Scottie Peros, the Buffanblu (7-1) took down Mira Costa — ranked No. 2 in its section — 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 in Friday’s second match of the Clash of the Titans at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

"We’re not going to make too much of this or too little," said Punahou coach Rick Tune, whose team won at top-ranked Kamehameha on Tuesday. "We got some blocks at the end and making the plays, playing defensive, playing well in transition.

"We beat a very, very, very good team tonight."

Game 4 was tied at 20 before Ma‘a’s kill sparked a 4-0 run that was capped by Tuileta’s solo block to set up match point.

Tuileta hit long, holding off the inevitable for one point but not a second, slamming down the match-ender.

Key to Punahou’s defense was Peros, a senior libero, who was cleared to play just this week following a meniscus injury.

As impressive as the victory was by Punahou, it took a back seat to the gutsy performance of Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Evan Enriques. The junior hitter, expected to miss the match with an injured left hand, came off the bench early in Set 2 to lead the Warriors past Santa Barbara, 14-25, 25-18, 25-22, 28-26.

Unofficially, Enriques finished with a match-high 20 kills for KS-Hawaii. But it was his leadership and court presence that made the difference for the Warriors (6-0), ranked No. 4 in the Star-Advertiser poll.

"I didn’t want to play him," Warriors coach Guy Enriques, Evan’s father, said. "But I couldn’t keep him out. He told me, ‘Dad, if the team can pass, I can hit.’ I asked how he could pass, he said he’d do it with one hand.

"We had to switch a few things in the beginning and our players stepped up. This was a very good team win. I’m glad it didn’t go five."

It didn’t appear that it would even go four, the way the Dons (6-6) dismantled the Warriors in Set 1. With sophomore Emmett Enriques moving from setter to outside, and senior Shannon Kanakaole setting his first match of the year, KS-Hawaii struggled with Evan Enriques — who slid hard into a wall during Thursday’s practice — on the bench.

The Warriors trailed 5-4 in Set 2 when Guy Enriques couldn’t ignore his son any longer. It took awhile before Evan Enriques adjusted to playing basically one-handed, but he did and KS-Hawaii got back in sync.

Two aces by Emmett Enriques — Nos. 3 and 4 of the set — put the Warriors up 18-13. The Dons closed to 19-16 but no closer with Enriques finishing it off with his fifth kill.

Enriques’ 5-0 service run put his team ahead for good at 12-9, and Enriques’ eighth kill of the set gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

It looked as if it would go five as Santa Barbara served for Set 4 at 24-22. KS-Hawaii held off two set points to tie at 24, then two more when behind at 25-24 and 26-25.

Enriques tied it for what would be the last time at 26. He served for the final two points, with two hitting errors by the Dons ending it.

Today’s matches have Punahou taking on Santa Barbara at 3 p.m., while KS-Hawaii faces Mira Costa.

"We’ll see who shows up tomorrow; I don’t feel our guys did tonight," Mustangs’ coach Mike Ninnis said. "We didn’t execute, but Punahou also played tremendous defense and have those outstanding hitters."
