The wild OIA West is beginning to settle down.
Waipahu (6-4) beat Aiea 4-1 at home Saturday to put itself alone in third place in the division behind Campbell (10-0) and Pearl City (7-3).
The Marauders are chasing Pearl City for the second spot and the valuable league bye that comes with it. There are two games left before the league tournament.
"I think it is going to come down to the last day," Waipahu coach Milton Takenaka said.
Na Alii didn’t blink when they saw Waipahu ace Dylan Sugimoto starting against them, loading the bases with two outs in the top of the first and scoring when Sugimoto walked Jason Abeshima. Sugimoto got out of it when he struck out Trevor Ling, his third strikeout of the inning, and did not allow another run the rest of the way.
Sugimoto, who didn’t pitch in Aiea’s 11-1 win over Waipahu in the first round, gave up two hits and struck out six while walking one. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Aiea left only three runners the rest of the way.
Waipahu is 5-0 when Sugimoto takes the hill, but 1-4 when another pitcher starts the game. He closed out the only other win with a save. The Marauders outscore opponents 17-6 when he starts, but have been outscored 38-16 when he doesn’t.
"It was a good pitcher," Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. "He did his job. We made some mistakes and they capitalized on it. It’s just one of those things."
Waipahu matched Aiea’s run in the bottom of the first when Sugimoto and Justin Padilla began the inning with singles and Tyler Enos walked. Aiea starter Dylan Madamba then showed that he was Sugimoto’s equal when surrounded by runners, allowing Sugimoto to score on a hot ground ball to first, then getting out of the fire with a strikeout of Guy Villanueva and a grounder to short by Jordan Mendiola.
The Marauders took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when normally sure-handed Aiea forgot how to throw the ball to first. Second baseman Liwai Manoa let a ground ball eat him up, and shortstop Daylan Pajimola and Abeshima at third made successive errors on throws to first base after picking up ground balls. The mistakes gave Waipahu a 3-1 lead.
The Marauders kept pace with Pearl City with the win, and trail the Chargers by a game for second place with two games left. Waipahu hosts Mililani and visits Leilehua, while Pearl City hosts undefeated Campbell and visits Aiea. The teams split their two games this season. Aiea (4-6) can finish no higher than third and visits Kapolei and hosts Pearl City.
"This puts us in a dogfight, the same position we were in when we started this thing," Kato said. "Now what we need to do is try and get as high up in the standings as we can, play hard in our last two games and let the chips fall where they may."
