COURTESY AMC "Mad Men" executive producer Scott Hornbacher, fourth from right in the blue aloha shirt, oversees the beach scene in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel while directing Jon Hamm and Jessica Pare. Hornbacher is being helped by first assistant director Adam Ben Frank, pointing, and director of photography Christopher Manley, who's framing the shot while kneeling in the sand.
COURTESY AMC "Mad Men" built an all-wood seven-stool bar near the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki for the filming of this scene with series star Jon Hamm.
COURTESY AMC With the exception of the paperback copy of "The Inferno," the Season 6 opening scene of "Mad Men" includes many details fans will never see: A plane ticket issued to "MR D Draper," cigarette butts, a fake mai tai and specially made coasters and a napkin that reflect the Royal Hawaiian Hotel of the late 1960s.
COURTESY AMC The luau scene was recreated from a Matson travel booklet of the period. It was shot on The Ocean Lawn of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, between the Mai Tai Bar, on the left, and the Monarch Ballroom. The palm trees on either side of the stage are fake.
