UH’s Genee is water polo player of week
Hawaii senior Amarens Geneeis the Big West Water Polo Co-Player of the Week after helping UH to four road wins. It is the first Big West honor for Genee.Teammate Monika Eggens isa two-time honoree this year.
Genee, from the Netherlands, shared the honor with UC Santa Barbara freshman Samantha Murphy.
The UH senior helped the Rainbow Wahine to twoBig West victories that vaulted them into first place. Genee played a crucial role in both wins, leading the team with five goals in a 14-12 victory over UC Davis and contributing two in a 12-11 win over Pacific.
At the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, Genee had a career-high seven goals in an 18-7 victory over Colorado State. It is the most goals scored by a Wahine this season and the third-highest single-match output in school history. Genee scored two more against Cal State East Bay in a 16-5 victory.
Seniors Genee, Eggens, Hannah Hogue, Katie Teets and Monique Wilson will make their final home appearance Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center, when Hawaii takes on Cal State Northridge at 6 p.m. A UH win will give the team at least a share of the conference regular-season title and the top seed in next week’s Big West tournament in Irvine, Calif.
Franke-Kuhn earns Big West track honor
Hawaii junior Joanna Franke-Kuhn is Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, giving the Rainbow Wahine three consecutive conference honors.
At last week’s Rainbow Relays, Franke-Kuhn threw for a meet record in the hammer, going 188 feet, 3 inches. That broke the mark she set last year by more than 11 feet.
Franke-Kuhn, from Duncan, British Columbia, now ranks No. 1 in the Big West.
UH triple jumper Amanda Alvarez won the honor the past two weeks.
