Class explores beauty of beans
Discover the bountiful possibilities of beans at Castle Wellness Center’s next "Eat Well for Life" cooking class April 25.
Instructors will demonstrate bean-centric vegan dishes that are simple and budget-friendly. Taste samples and go home with recipes.
The class runs from 6 to 7 p.m. at the wellness center. Cost is $15, $20 couples, $10 seniors and students. Reservations are required two days in advance; call 263-5400 or register online at castlemed.org.
Dinner benefits Star of the Sea
More than 20 eateries will share their fare with diners at the East Honolulu Food Festival, a benefit for Star of the Sea Church and School, on May 4.
Restaurants include Adega Portuguesa, Da Spot Health Foods & Juices, JJ’s French Bistro, Soul Patrol, 5-0 Hawaiian Style Smoked Ribs, Grand Cafe & Bakery and Maile’s Thai Bistro.
The event raises money for school equipment and the church’s youth and homeless ministries.
The festival runs 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the school grounds at 4470 Aliikoa St. Cost is $60 pre-sale, $70 at the door, $25 children. VIP tables are $1,200 and $3,000. Call 734-0396 or email ehffinfo@gmail.com.
Moiliili plans spirited event
Find treasures of kitchenware, porcelain and ceramics, wine and restaurant gift cards at "Ignite the Spirit … New Beginnings," a benefit for Moiliili Community Center, May 4 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
The event includes no-host cocktails and a dinner buffet.

First lady hosts recipe contest
Children are invited to submit lunch recipes for first lady Michelle Obama’s second annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.
Obama is asking youths ages 8 to 12 to create dishes that represent each food group. Winners will travel to Washington to sample some of the original dishes at the White House kids’ "state dinner" luncheon this summer.
Last year’s challenge drew more than 1,200 entries. Hawaii’s winner was Stefani Shimomura-Sakamoto.
Deadline to submit recipes is May 12.
