Kapiolani Community College’s culinary competition team, Team Hawaii 2013, took the American Culinary Federation’s Western Regional Student Team Championships Monday. The competition took place in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Spokane, Wash.
Team Hawaii will vie against three other regional groups at a national contest in July in Las Vegas.
The competition consisted of cold-food presentation, skills and cooking. The latter entailed preparing a fish starter, salad and dessert of the team’s choice, plus a preassigned classic French dish, Poulet Sauté Bercy, a whole chicken preparation.
"Team Hawaii performed to the best of their abilities and brought the flavors of Hawaii to Coeur d’Alene and Spokane," said chef instructor Grant Sato, who accompanied the team.
Hawaii competed against six other teams, from Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
