Harlequins win state rugby title
Two penalty kicks by Thierry Daupin helped the Hawaii Harlequins Rugby Football Club hold off the Laie Lions 18-17 in Saturday’s Hawaii Union Rugby State Championship at Kapiolani Park.
Daupin’s second penalty kick gave the Harlequins an 18-3 lead, but the Lions scored two tries and converted both two-point extra points in the final seven minutes to pull within a point. Laie could get no closer as the Harlequins won their first state title in some 20 years.
The Harlequins’ Chesney Schmeltzer was named MVP.
The club swept the union’s season awards, led by MVP Tyler Harrison. Also honored were Daupin (best back), Nathan Powelson (best forward), Thomas Ray (16th man), Kaipo Sarkissian (Robert Kiyosaki Award) and Wilitonu Forokalafi (President’s Award).
