Sea Warriors take men’s tennis crown

Top-seeded Hawaii Pacific turned back third seed Fresno Pacific 5-3 to claim the Pacific West Conference men’s tennis championship Saturday at the Central Oahu Regional Park courts.

The Sea Warriors (18-3), ranked fifth nationally, got wins at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles. The clinching victory came at No. 1, where Petr Michnev topped the Sunbirds’ Kirill Sinitsyn 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Michnev was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

HPU advances to the NCAA D-II national championships, May 8-11 at Surprise, Ariz.

» Also Saturday, No. 41 Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Point Loma Nazarene 5-2 in the fifth-place match. The Seasiders (13-7) won at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and clinched the victory at No. 6 singles, when Dai Peng swept Kaptan Kaster 6-4, 6-4.

BYUH earns PacWest women’s tennis title

Second-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii avenged its only loss of the season by shutting out top seed Hawaii Pacific 5-0 to earn the Pacific West Conference women’s tennis tournament title Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Seasiders, No. 4 nationally, improved to 27-1 by sweeping the three doubles matches and winning at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. It was the sixth consecutive year that BYUH and HPU met in the conference tournament finals, with the Seasiders winning all six titles.

BYUH’s Annie Wang was named the tournament’s most valuable player, winning at both No. 1 singles and doubles, the latter with Sherry Liu. Wang dropped just four sets in three tournament matches.

Both the Seasiders and Sea Warriors (18-2), ranked No. 3 nationally, await a bid and seeding into the NCAA D-II national tournament, May 8-12 in Surprise, Ariz.

Kua maintains 4-shot lead at Mid-Pac Open

TJ Kua shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to stay four strokes ahead of former PGA Tour member Dean Wilson at the Mid-Pacific Open in Lanikai.

Wilson also carded a 67 in the professional division to remain in range of Kua heading into today’s final round at 11-under 205. Kua, who on Friday set a tournament record with a 62, was at 15-under 201.

Eric Meichtry (67) and Hiroyuki Naito (76) were tied for third place at 216.

UH goes 2-1 in sand volleyball

The fifth-ranked Hawaii sand volleyball team went 2-1 in dual matches Saturday, the first day of the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge in Hermosa Beach, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 1 Pepperdine 5-0 before beating Santa Clara 4-1 and No. 6 UCLA 3-2.

BYUH softball team snaps losing streak

The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team ended a 27-game losing streak Saturday by defeating Dominican 8-7 in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader in San Rafael, Calif.

Tiffanee Frampton gave up just three earned runs and also drove in five to lead BYUH to victory.

The Seasiders (6-40, 3-27) then lost the second game 6-1 to the Penguins (9-41, 2-24).

QB Club welcomes UH water polo coaches

University of Hawaii water polo coach Maureen Flanagan Cole and associate coach Serela Kay will be the guest speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at Maple Garden restaurant.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow at noon. The luncheon cost is $15.
