Vulcans lead shortened golf championships
Hawaii Hilo carded a 293 to take an eight-stroke lead into today’s final round of the controversy-marred PacWest men’s golf tournament at Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The 12-team tournament was initially a 54-hole event, but was cut to 36 holes after a problem with the course setup for round one was discovered. Tee markers for three holes were not set to match the scorecards, with a large portion of the 60-player field not playing the same course as the remaining golfers.
First-round scores were eliminated after consultation with USGA representatives and input from the conference coaches.
Vulcans Dalen Yamauchi shot a 3-under 69 on the Wigwam Golf Course’s Gold Course, four shots ahead of teammate James Hall, BYU-Hawaii’s Colten Lambe and Grand Canyon’s Alex Dalhquist.
The Seasiders were in second at 301, followed by Grand Canyon and Dixie State at 302. Hawaii Pacific was fifth at 308, with Cal Baptist at 309 and Academy of Art at 310.
Point Loma and Dominican shared eighth at 313, Notre Dame de Namur was at 317, Chaminade at 318 and Holy Names at 319.
