Jake Torigoe fits just fine in the cleanup spot.

Torigoe hit two home runs in the fifth inning and Kaiser routed Aiea 14-2 in five innings in the first round of the OIA baseball playoffs at Kaiser on Wednesday.

Torigoe was playing his first game after pulling his hamstring three games ago. He was Kaiser’s leadoff hitter before going down, but Kelen Yoshioka was doing such a fine job that Torigoe lost that job. His new job suits him just fine.

“I don’t know why today we hit like that, but I hope it keeps going,” Kaiser coach Mark Rasmussen said. “These kids have been working hard. Most of all it gives us confidence.”

Torigoe, a lefty, blasted a two-run home run over the fence in right field off Austin Yoshino to give Kaiser a 7-2 lead. His blast was saved from reaching Lunalilo Home Road by a tree. The tree couldn’t save the street the next time.

The Cougars batted around to his spot in the inning, bringing him up with the bases loaded and a 10-2 lead. Torigoe then lofted an even longer home run over the trees and onto the road against Micah Peters-Valdez to end it 14-2 due to the mercy rule.

Kaiser visits OIA top seed Campbell today as the tournament continues. Aiea, which hasn’t reached the state tournament since 2008, saw its season end with the barrage.

Torigoe went 2-for-3 with six RBIs, but he wasn’t alone in battering Aiea pitching. Yoshioka went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with a grand slam of his own and Makana Lyman went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and set up Torigoe’s heroics by flying out to short for the second out of the fifth inning.

“I was just looking fastball and I squared it up,” Torigoe said. “On the granny I was looking for (Lyman) to smack one over the trees and that would have been just as good.”

Michael Austin went 2-for-3 and limited Aiea to two runs on five hits over five innings from the mound.

He escaped a jam in the top of the fifth when Aiea’s Patrick Villanueva hit a laser to Kaiser shortstop Shawn Miyashiro with the bases loaded.

“That’s just the way it goes sometimes,” Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. “We knew going in that this team could hit. We were forced to pitch to batters we would rather pitch around. It’s kind of a funny game.

We had the bases loaded and our guy hit a line drive that got caught.”

The winner between Campbell and Kaiser earns a trip to states. The Cougars beat the Sabers 6-1 in the second round of the OIA playoffs last year and it eventually cost Campbell a spot in the tournament. Today’s loser needs to win one more game to earn a ticket to the states on Maui.

“Campbell is so good,” Rasmussen said. “Every year, they just reload. They’ve got some young kids and are really talented, so we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

“All during the season, we weren’t hitting that well,” Torigoe said. “It’s good to get this momentum going into Campbell just to have to get to states and go for OIAs. We were all hyped. We knew we needed to win this game or else our season is almost done.”
