Hawaii Starwood resorts have learned just where they stand with members of the company’s Starwood Preferred Guest program, and the list might engender some sister-property sibling squabbling.
Seven Hawaii Starwood properties placed among the top 12 resorts in six of nine category rankings, but none topped any of the lists, which were released Thursday.
The highest-ranked Hawaii Starwood property was the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, which is at No. 2 on the Best Beach Resort list. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was No. 4. The sixth-ranked was St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai, and the only other Hawaii property on the top 12 list was the eighth-ranked Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas.
The favorite resorts are selected annually by Starwood Preferred Guest members.
Hawaii properties did well on the Best Golf Getaway and Best Family Experience lists.
On the golf getaway list the St. Regis Princeville Resort ranked No. 5, and the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka‘anapali is at No. 11 of 12. On the Best Family Experience list, the Sheraton Waikiki, Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka‘anapali are at Nos. 7, 9 and 11, respectively.
St. Regis Princeville also ranked sixth on the Best Island Paradise list.
For the Most Romantic Retreat, the Royal Hawaiian came in at No. 7 and the St. Regis Princeville at No. 9.
Only the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka‘anapali, at No. 8, made the Best Spa Indulgence list.
Hawaii Starwood properties did not have a prayer of landing on the Best Exotic Escape list, as those all are on foreign soil. The term "Best Winter Adventures" likely involves much colder weather than Hawaii Starwoods can offer, and the local properties also are not on the Best Small Wonder list.
KFVE KIDS’ SHOW RETURNS
"It’s Academic" will begin its second season of cranial competition between some of Hawaii’s smartest kids.
And that is Hawaii’s smartest kids, not just Oahu’s kids. Contestants will be from all major islands, according to General Manager John Fink.
"Our goal with this broadcast is to showcase and acknowledge the efforts being made academically throughout the state in both public and private schools on all the Hawaiian Islands," he said in a statement.
The show, which returns to the airwaves and online streaming at 7 p.m. Mondays starting May 6, will test students on a range of topics including math, science, history, geography, literature, sports, Hawaiian language and culture, current events and general information.
The Monday night shows will be rebroadcast weekly at 6:30 p.m. Sundays.
Hawaii News Now anchor Keahi Tucker will host the broadcast, which initially will have teams from Calvary Chapel Christian School, Punahou School and Radford High School competing.
Semifinals begin with the July 8 broadcast, and the championship will air July 29.
Up for grabs at the championship level are a Sony Xperia Tablet Z, Sony Action Cam, Power Cards from Dave & Buster’s and a trophy engraved with the names of each team member.
