I was feeling thirsty as I passed through Shirokiya’s food court at Ala Moana Center when I spotted Mayumi Kawakami offering small cups of water.
OK, I’m a hard sell, but for a little bit of water I was willing to listen to her pitch. In this case she was selling Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi’s HydrogenRich Water Stick, a porous tube filled with magnesium that reacts with oxygen to form hydrogen-rich gas.
Hayashi, from Japan’s Water Institute, believes that most water is bad for us because of its free-radical oxygen content. Oxygen is known for its oxidative properties, the same reaction that causes metal to rust and damages DNA in the body. Hayashi believes hydrogen-rich water removes the toxic free-radical oxygen, helping people to stay healthy.
I ended up buying one of the $79.95 sticks that can be added to a bottle of water and shaken to release the hydrogen bubbles. Time will tell whether it works, but just the idea of a little health boost has me reaching for the water bottle more often than sugary soft drinks, and that alone is a plus.
