Mariel Galdiano, the Punahou freshman who did not win the ILH championship, soared into the lead after Tuesday’s first round of the David S. Ishii/HHSAA Girls Golf State Championships.
Galdiano fired a 3-under-par 68 at the Royal Kaanapali Course. She takes a four-shot lead over Waiakea senior Ciera Min into today’s final round.
Punahou, trying to win its sixth girls title in seven years, leads the team standings by 17 shots. Galdiano, Aiko Leong (77) and ILH champ Allisen Corpuz (77) — all freshmen — are in the top five, giving the Buffanblu a 222 total. Defending champion ‘Iolani and Waiakea are next at 239.
Baldwin’s Marissa Uradomo is alone in third after a 75. The last two state champs — seniors Kacie Komoto (Punahou) and Eimi Koga (Moanalua) — shot 79 and 78. Komoto will go to Northwestern in the fall and Koga to Washington. Min is headed to Gonzaga.
