Rainbow Wahine sign point guard
Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Laura Beeman announced the signing of 5-foot-7 point guard Briana Harris of St. Monica Catholic High School on Tuesday.
Harris, a lefty, averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals per game en route to CIF Division 4A Player of the Year honors as a senior.
"I think she’ll be able to come in and contribute immediately," said Beeman, who expects her to split time with sophomore Marissa Wimbley. "We’re really, really excited about her."
Harris is the fourth player to sign with the Wahine for the 2013-14 season, after Mount San Antonio’s Ashley Burchfield, Morgan Mason and Shawlina Segovia last fall. Those three led the Mounties to an undefeated season and their second straight state JUCO championship.
Beeman said she has two scholarships remaining for 2013-14 and covets an outside shooter and an all-around scorer.
UH puts 2 on All-Big West first team
Rainbow Wahine senior Katarina Poljakova earned first-team All-Big West tennis honors Tuesday along with junior teammate Xenia Suworowa. Poljakova, from Slovakia, and Suworowa, from Germany, were named first team in singles and doubles.
Men’s all-conference honors went to Hawaii junior Jonathan Brooklyn (first-team singles), senior Dmytro Kovalyov (second-team singles) and junior Jared Spiker (honorable mention). Brooklyn, from England, and Kovalyov, from Ukraine, also earned all-conference doubles honors.
Spiker is a two-time Hawaii state high school champion out of Kalani.
The Wahine reached the semifinals at last weekend’s Big West championship. Long Beach State won its ninth Big West women’s title in the past 10 years, with an assist from conference freshman of the year Ebba Unden. The player of the year was UC Irvine senior Kristina Smith. Mike Edles (Irvine) and Bill Reynolds (Cal State Fullerton) are co-coaches of the year.
Fifth-seeded UC Santa Barbara defeated Pacific in the Big West men’s final Sunday. Cal Poly senior Andrew Dome was named player of the year a second straight season. Pacific’s Sem Verbeek is the freshman of the year and UOP’s Ryan Redondo is coach of the year.

First-round leader Hawaii ended up sixth in its first Big West Men’s Golf Championships, which ended Tuesday at The Country Club at Soboba Springs, in San Jacinto, Calif. Warriors junior Nainoa Calip was seventh individually, at 76—220.
It was the best finish of the season for Calip, and his best result since a fourth last year.
Pacific defeated Cal State Fullerton in a one-hole playoff to earn the BWC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals. Both teams finished at 23-over-par 887. Hawaii closed at 310—906.
Second-round leader Corey Gard, from Fullerton, fired a 5-over-par 77 to finish at 217. That created a three-way tie for medalist honors with UOP’s Eric Sugimoto (74) and UC Santa Barbara’s Brett Silvernail (69). Sugimoto won the title on the second playoff hole.
Moanalua graduate Seungjae Maeng, a UOP freshman, finished 16th at 77—224. UH senior Cory Oride (76—226) tied for 20th. He was followed by teammates David Saka (79—230), Scott Yamashita (79—230) and Thomas Yamashita (83—252).
