The daughter of a Haleiwa woman charged with killing the family’s pet dog over the weekend has contradicted what her mother told police, city Deputy Prosecutor Chastity Imamura said.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging Andrea Fiegle with felony cruelty to animals. Fiegle, 36, remains free on $11,000 bail.
Police said Fiegle told them she cut the dog’s throat with a kitchen knife at her Paalaa Road home Sunday after losing her temper. She said the dog kept sniffing at her daughter’s "private area" and didn’t listen to commands to stop.
Imamura told Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario that the daughter told police that’s not what happened.
The daughter also told police her mother injured herself just before killing the dog. She told police her mother picked up a rock at the park and hit herself in the head with it, Imamura said.
Del Rosario denied Imamura’s request to increase Fiegle’s bail to $50,000.
Imamura said the dog had multiple stab wounds, including a 12-inch-long cut that severed its windpipe and fractured two ribs. She said the injuries interrupted the dog’s breathing and caused severe bleeding.
Fiegle called 911 to report that she had killed the dog. Police found the dog’s remains in a garbage bag.
The dog was a 50-pound male hound mix, 1 to 2 years old, said Jacque LeBlanc, community relations director of the Hawaiian Humane Society. She said the necropsy shows the dog had at least seven deep stab wounds from a butcher knife.
"We do know for certain this was a horrific death and this dog suffered greatly," LeBlanc said.
