Hawaii has two breakfast venues listed among the Urbanspoon list of 101 Great Breakfasts in the U.S., hot on the heels of getting two entries in the OpenTable.com hot U.S. brunch spots.
Urbanspoon, an online dining and review site, picked Duke’s Waikiki Restaurant in the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Maui’s Kihei Caffe for its list.
In its write-up, Urbanspoon offers tips about getting seated when demand is high, and suggests skipping the basics in favor of an eatery’s signature dishes, pointing out that you’ve earned the splurge, having waited awhile for seating.

TV Awards time
Former Hawaii News Now anchorwoman Teri Okita won the Best Anchor award among 13 Western states based on market size in the annual Mark Twain Awards competition staged by the Associated Press Television-Radio Association.
Okita also is a finalist for a regional Emmy for an anchoring award in another competition, about which you’ll read more in a moment.
Hawaii News Now also won the Best Morning News Broadcast award, as well as an award for Best Coverage of an Ongoing Story, in this case, the "Wonder Blunder."
Hawaii News Now also is in the running for the "Best Evening Newscast" award and will find out whether it beat KVOA in Tucson, Ariz., June 22.
Neither KHON nor KITV entered the APTRA competition, station officials said.
However, each local network affiliate did enter the 42nd Annual Northern California Area EMMY Awards competition, staged by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and each is a finalist for a News Excellence award.
Additionally, KITV is in the running in the best evening newscast category among medium markets.
Reporter Jim Mendoza of HNN is a finalist for a general assignment reporting award; and KITV’s Moanikeala Nabarro is nominated for a weather anchoring award. Also at KITV, Mike Darrah is nominated for a newswriting award, as is former KHNL-TV anchorwoman Diane Ako, for her staradvertiser.com blog post titled "Saving a Sweet Craft."
It’s not just news programming that can enter the competition.
"When The Mountain Calls: Nepal — Tibet — Bhutan," by KHET-TV, aka PBS Hawaii, is a finalist for an award in the Historic/Cultural-Program/Special category.
"Lantern Floating Hawaii 2012," a Shinnyo-en Hawaii production directed by Kenny Koarashi and Shinji Kondo that aired on KGMB-TV, and PBS Hawaii’s "Malama ko Aloha," directed by Michael Harris, are competing in the Director-Live or Live-to-Tape category.
Finalists include local cable as well, specifically OC16.
Howard Dashefsky, producer, writer and reporter of "Wounded Warriors: Amazing Athletes," is up for the Public/Current/Community Affairs-Feature/Segment award, a category in which The Filipino Channel has four of the six nominations.
Dashefsky and his production team also are up for an award in the Health/Science/Environment-Feature/Segment for "Fighting to Fit In," while Maui-based photographer Jess Craven and his Rabbit Rock Entertainment are nominated for the Photographer-Program award, for a composite of work shown on OC16.
Those awards will be announced June 15.
