UHH men in 10th after first round
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team was in 10th place heading into today’s second round of the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional in Dupont, Wash.
The Vulcans carded a team-aggregate 290 at The Home Course, 11 strokes behind leader Cal State Monterey Bay. Dalen Yamauchi and Jaime Hall had the Vulcans’ top scores, with 2-under-par 70s, tying them for 11th place. Chris Shimomura was tied for 25th after a 72; Corey Kozuma was tied for 92nd at 78; and Kyeton Littel tied for 100th at 79.
Dallas Baptist’s Kyle Beard shot a 66 to take the first-round lead.
The 54-hole event runs through Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Vulcans open at regional Friday
Hawaii Hilo begins its quest for a national title Friday against host Dixie State in the NCAA II West Regional at St. George, Utah.
The fourth-seeded Vulcans (39-17) and third-seeded Red Storm (37-12) shared the PacWest title, with UHH earning the automatic berth via a tiebreaker. The teams split their doubleheader this season in Hilo, the Vulcans winning 5-0 and the Red Storm winning 2-1.
Regional play opens with second-seeded Sonoma State (36-19) facing third seed Cal State Dominguez Hills (34-21).
The double-elimination concludes Sunday with the winner advancing to the May 17-18 super regional. The NCAA II Championship is May 23-27 at Salem, Va.
Academic honors to HPU’s Elderts
Hawaii Pacific sophomore center fielder Keila Elderts was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team.
Elderts has a 3.5 GPA in mathematics. She hit .429 for the season in starting every game for the Sea Warriors (30-19) with 48 runs, eight doubles, five triples and 26 RBIs.
Elderts is eligible for Academic All-America, which will be voted on this week.
HONOR ROLL
Rebecca Lee, UHH: The junior catcher out of Mililani hit .667 in the doubleheader sweep of Hawaii Pacific on May 4, giving the Vulcans a share of the PacWest title and an automatic berth in the NCAA II championship tournament.
Ashley Nelson, UHH: The sophomore pitcher scattered six hits, striking out four with one walk in a 3-0 complete-game victory over the Sea Warriors in the regular-season finale for both.
Hannah Peterson, UHH: The freshman pitcher gave up seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks in a 7-2 complete-game win over the Sea Warriors.
Chante Tesoro, HPU: The senior outfielder out of Hawaii Baptist hit .714 (5-for-7) with two doubles in the doubleheader loss to Hawaii Hilo.
Brandi Wilson, UHH: The freshman outfielder hit .600 in the doubleheader sweep of HPU. She was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
SOCCER
Sea Warriors host summer camp
Hawaii Pacific’s Third Sea Warriors Summer Soccer Camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-14, is scheduled for June 10-13 at the HPU Atherton Soccer Field.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon and will focus on skills and techniques.
