Paul N. Gregg, a senior at Parker School on Hawaii island, received two national academic awards this week as he was named a U.S. presidential scholar and a National Merit Scholarship award winner.
He is one of two presidential scholars and one of 10 National Merit winners from Hawaii this year. He is the only person from Hawaii to receive both awards.
Gregg credits Parker School English teacher Kiyoshi Najita as his most influential teacher, the presidential scholar announcement says.
The second presidential scholar from Hawaii is Zoe C. Sims, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy on Hawaii island. Sims calls Mollie Hustace her most influential teacher.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 2013 presidential scholars this week, recognizing 141 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics or the arts.
Gregg is also one of 10 winners from Hawaii — and among 2,500 nationally — of a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship. Winners were judged to have a combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Five of Hawaii’s awardees are from Punahou School. They are Elizabeth K. Ito, Jordan K. Kondo, Philip H. Lin, Colin L. Pating and Sean K. Rodan.
The others, in addition to Gregg, are Jason K.W. Cheng of Kaiser High School, Logan K. Davis of ‘Iolani School, Nicolas G. Lee of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama and Philip L. Bretz of Trinity Christian School of Kailua.
