As opponents, Hawaii and Fresno State are no strangers in college baseball.
As members of different conferences, Tuesday’s game was something new.
Aaron Judge and Trent Garrison each hit two-run homers and Kevin Viers had three doubles and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs in an 8-6 win over Hawaii in a nonconference game at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.
After 27 meetings over the previous five years, including eight in the Western Athletic Conference tournament, Hawaii and Fresno State played Tuesday as members of different leagues.
Both have struggled in their new surroundings. The Bulldogs, now in the Mountain West Conference, won for the ninth time in their last 14 games just to get to 17-29 overall.
Hawaii (11-31) dropped to 2-2 on its current road trip and needs to finish 5-4 over its final nine games to avoid its lowest win total in 39 years.
Trevor Podratz went 3-for-4 with a double and a career-high four RBIs and Kalei Hanawahine came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Marc Flores, who is hitting .615 (8-for-13) on the road trip, was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Kaeo Aliviado singled twice and scored once.
Hawaii used four pitchers, including three that had not pitched on this trip.
Senior Patrick O’Rourke, who had thrown only 81⁄3 innings all year, got the start and gave up two runs on four hits in two innings to drop to 0-2.
Jim MacWilliam gave up three runs in two innings and Max Duval allowed two runs on three hits in two innings as Fresno State built a 7-1 lead after six innings.
"I was actually happy to see a guy like Jimmy MacWilliam go out there and record some outs and make some good pitches," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "The guy works hard, grinds it out in practice every day and goes out there today and hangs in there."
Tyler Linehan, who was the Bulldogs’ ace last year, entered the game with an 8.39 ERA and started for only the fifth time.
He pitched three shutout innings to improve to 2-7. He walked three batters and gave up two hits.
FSU outhit the Rainbows 11-10.
"We couldn’t get anything going the first five innings, and that was basically too many innings to not be able to score," Trapasso said. "We knew we were going to have to score because we felt in this ballpark throwing our downstaff guys that we might give up some runs, but they held us in the game."
Trailing 7-1, Hawaii scored four times in the seventh inning off reliever Garrett Mundell to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Flores hit an RBI single up the middle and Podratz cleared the bases with a three-run double.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth off Scott Kuzminsky. Judge, a potential first-round pick in June’s MLB draft, hit a one-out double, stole third, and scored on an RBI groundout to make it 8-5.
Hanawahine scored a run in the ninth when Fresno State threw the ball away trying to turn an inning-ending double play.
UH will close out its second-to-last road trip with a three-game series at Long Beach State, beginning Friday.
