A 66-year-old Maui man died Thursday after the vehicle he was driving struck another in West Maui.
Robert K. Adams died at the scene, a little less than a mile west of the Lahaina Pali, police said.
He was driving west on Honoapiilani Highway when his car crossed the centerline, collided with a four-door sedan heading east, then hit a kiawe tree at 11:11 a.m.
Two men visiting from La Jolla, Calif., were in the sedan and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. They were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Debris from the accident struck a compact car behind the sedan.
The fatality is the sixth in Maui County so far this year, compared with 11 for the same period last year.
Passenger questioned on pressure cooker
The FBI held a passenger at Hilo Airport for questioning Wednesday when he tried to check in luggage containing what appeared to be a modified pressure cooker.
The item was found during a security screening.
On April 15 two bombs made from pressure cookers killed three people and injured more than 260 at the Boston Marathon.
In Wednesday’s case in Hilo, authorities did not arrest or charge the man, and he was released. The FBI did seize some contents of the man’s luggage in addition to the pressure cooker. No explosives were found, the FBI said.
"The FBI does not believe that this incident poses any imminent threat to civil aviation based on our limited investigation thus far," a written statement from the FBI said.
