Hawaii surfer Carissa Moore won her quarterfinal heat on Saturday before losing to Australian Sally Fitzgibbons in the semifinals of the Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro.
Australia’s Tyler Wright defeated Fitzgibbons in a high-scoring final, 17.80-15.67.
Moore topped Australia’s Laura Enever 15.10-10.24 in the quarterfinal in 2- to 3-foot surf at Barra da Tijuca.
Fitzgibbons outpointed Moore 13.90-11.97 in the semifinals.
"It was a good heat with Sally, but there were just not that many waves," Moore told the Association of Surfing Professionals’ website.
"We paddled all over the beach and sometimes it turns into strategy and paddle-battling and unfortunately I was on the other end of it today. It’s all right, though, and I’ll take this on to the next event."
Moore fell to second in the World Championship Tour rankings. She has accumulated 38,200 points through five of seven events. Wright sits atop the standings with 40,000 points.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel lost to Wright in the quarterfinals, 15.83-13.74.
