Flavors of Peranakan cuisine profiled at cultural exhibit

Get a taste of aromatic, spicy Peranakan dishes — a combination of Chinese, Malay and Thai cuisine — at a cooking demonstration Sunday at the East-West Center Gallery on the University of Hawaii campus.

From 1 to 2 p.m., Alice and Matthew Yapp from Singapore will be preparing Mee Siam, a dish of rice noodles in spicy sweet-and-sour gravy; and Kacang Ijor, a green-bean dessert that uses fresh coconut milk.

The free demo is part of an opening reception for the East-West Center arts and culture exhibition "Peranakan Chinese Heritage of Southeast Asia" that runs through Sept. 15. The show will feature textiles, clothing, beaded slippers, cooking utensils and ceramics, as well as videos and photos of marriage rituals, funeral customs and birthing traditions.

The gallery is in John A. Burns Hall, 1601 East-West Road, at the corner of Dole Street and East-West Road. Call 944-7177.
