HPU signs 3 to play men’s basketball
Hawaii Pacific signed three players from California to play for the men’s basketball team next season, coach Darren Vorderbruegge said.
Point guard Justin Long, forward Connor Gillet and post player Jordan Garrett will play for the Sea Warriors.
The 6-foot Long, a California Community College Athletic Association first-team selection for Chaffey College, averaged 15.8 points in his second of two years with the team.
The 6-6, 220-pound Gillett won back-to-back conference titles with Santa Rosa Community College. Last season, he averaged 10.1 points and 9.4 rebounds.
Garrett, who is 6-8 and 215 pounds, played as a freshman at Cal State Monterey Bay and transferred to Moorpark College, where he averaged 14.5 points per game.
Sea Warriors bring in 3 to women’s team
The HPU women’s basketball team signed three players for next season, coach Reid Takatsuka said.
Taylor Blake, Hannah Reynolds and Laken McClelland will play for the Sea Warriors.
Blake averaged 20.5 points, 3.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game as a 5-8 senior shooting guard at Palmer High School in Alaska.
Reynolds, a 5-6 point guard, won the Skyline Conference player of the year award and was named the player of the game in a victory in the Oregon 4A state final.
McClelland, a 5-11 wing, scored 18 points per game and averaged nearly eight rebounds, for Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon, Wash. She was also the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ MVP.
