Phillips into semifinals of Golden Gloves
John Phillips of Wahiawa has advanced to the semifinals of the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Salt Lake City.
The Leilehua graduate, fighting at 178 pounds, decisioned Beven Woydziak of Kansas, Okla.
Phillips defeated Joe Jones of Washington, D.C., on Tuesday and decisioned Vince Baccus of Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday.
The only other boxer from Hawaii, Joshua McShane of Waianae, was eliminated in the first round Monday. He lost by decision to New York’s Jaime Estrada at 123 pounds.
Wagner named Mid-Pac athletic director
Scott M. Wagner, a New England athletic director, has been named new AD at Mid-Pacific Institute.
A native of Wisconsin, Wagner was chosen from a field of 80 applicants. Wagner was the AD of The Williams School in New London, Conn., the past seven years. He also held athletic director positions at Virginia and Milwaukee.
"His passion for coaching and the life lessons that can be learned through sports make him a great match for MPI," MPI high school principal Thomas McManus said in a press release.
Wagner replaces Joe Ito, MPI’s AD for the past five years who took a job as Activities Director at the Frankfurt International School, one of Europe’s largest international schools.
Campbell earns PacWest baseball honor
Hawaii Pacific outfielder Marvin Campbell was named first team as well as Newcomer of the Year on the all-PacWest baseball team.
HPU’s Kale Sumner also was named to the first team as a first baseman and to the second team as a third baseman.
Also honored were Hawaii Hilo shortstop John Abreu (second team), HPU second baseman Russell Doi (third team) and catcher Jordan Inamasu (third team).
Fujikawa shoots 78, misses the cut
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot a 6-over 78 and missed the cut at the inaugural eGolf Tour’s Palisades Classic at Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday. Fujikawa finished 13-over 157, 28 shots behind leader Andy Bare of West End, N.C., who is at 129 after a 66 on Thursday.
