Stabbing in Wahiawa prompts questioning at area businesses
A 20-year-old man was seriously injured when he was stabbed Saturday morning in Wahiawa. Police have opened an attempted-murder investigation.
Some parts of Wahiawa were blocked off for the Pineapple Run 10K at the time of the 9:45 a.m. incident. Police questioned employees at local businesses about whether they had seen anyone suspicious in the area.
An employee at Maui Mike’s Fire-Roasted Chicken said police arrived in the area at about noon and left about three hours later.
Kymmie Huynh, part-owner of Nails Designs at the corner of Olive Avenue and Kamehameha Highway, said, "I was here around 8:15 a.m., but I didn’t hear any noise or anything."
Arson suspect sought after fire damages vacant house
Police were looking Saturday for a man in his 20s who is suspected of setting fire to a vacant Kailua house Friday night.
Police said the fire began at about 10:28 p.m. when someone used an unknown accelerant to set fire to a house in the Enchanted Lake neighborhood. Police have opened a first-degree arson case.
The fire investigator estimated damage to the property at $54,000.
Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the house, at 1040 Kupau St., had recently been refurbished for sale. He said one wall was damaged in an explosion from gas buildup, but the fire was immediately extinguished.
Lum said witnesses reported seeing someone leave the scene.
Woman airlifted to safety after fall off Koko Crater trail
A fire department helicopter crew on Saturday aided a woman who fell off the Koko Crater Rim Trail.
Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the woman, in her mid-20s, was hiking when she slipped and slid partway down the mountain.
The area was difficult to access by foot, so rescue personnel airlifted her to Kamiloiki Elementary School, where Emergency Medical Services personnel treated her about 2 p.m. The woman suffered bumps, bruises and scrapes, and declined to be taken to a hospital.
Man is arrested and charged in string of vehicle break-ins
Prosecutors have charged a 29-year-old homeless man with breaking into a number of cars in Kalihi on March 24.
Police arrested Donald Montero Jr. Friday at Oahu Community Correctional Center, where he was being held on another case. He was charged with four counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. His bail was set at $20,000.
