Zietz advances to Rio Pro quarterfinals
Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz won his third- and fourth-round heats at the Billabong Rio Pro on Saturday, advancing to the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro.
The Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour rookie beat Australian Julian Wilson 17.47 to 16.34 in the third round before topping Michel Bourez and Glenn Hall in the fourth.
Zietz faces Australia’s Mick Fanning in the quarterfinals today, the final day of competition.
Klink earns Gatorade soccer honor
Leo Klink of Kalani High School was named the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Klink had 26 goals and eight assists this season and led the Falcons to a Division I state championship. He has signed a letter of intent to play at UC Irvine this fall.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and character. Klink is now eligible for the national award, which will be announced later this month.
Beeman, Makahilahila to speak at QB Club
Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman and Punahou softball coach Bobby Makahilahila will be the guest speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the program starts at noon. The cost is $15.
