Man dies in rescue attempt
A 31-year-old man died at Waimea Falls on Sunday after trying to help a woman in distress.
Fire spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said the man went into the water to try to help the woman near the falls and disappeared beneath the surface. Lum said his department received a call about the missing man from Emergency Services at 4:12 p.m. Sunday.
Lum said fire rescue personnel and lifeguards participated in the search. The man’s body was found about 25 feet below the surface of the pond at 5:20 p.m.
Lum said the woman was rescued by others.
Woman injured in shooting
Honolulu police detectives were investigating a report of a shooting Sunday in Waianae.
A woman, 43, who was injured, was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Honolulu Police Lt. Paul Lucas said initial reports indicated the incident happened at 4:43 p.m near Yokohama Bay.
In a phone interview, Lucas said police are looking into reports of a woman in the area near the injured woman.
"It’s an ongoing investigation," he said. "We’re looking for additional witnesses, getting statements. We haven’t got all the answers yet."
Victim stabbed at Aala Park
Police are looking for a man who stabbed another man at Aala Park on Saturday.
Police said a man walked into the Chinatown substation with a stab wound to his chest at about 8:30 p.m.
The assailant, described as being in his 30s, allegedly used a silver pocketknife to stab the victim at the Ewa end of the park.
The victim, 41, was taken to a trauma hospital in serious but stable condition, said city Emergency Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
