Police are continuing to search for a woman who a friend said worked as an escort and was last seen in Waikiki early Thursday.
Ivanice Joruth Harris of Portland, Ore., was expected to celebrate her 29th birthday on Saturday with her friend, Jillian Gibides.
Gibides said Monday that Harris kept in touch with her mother daily but hadn’t done so since before Harris was reported missing.
Gibides said Harris was in the companionship-for-hire business. It is uncertain whether that might have been a factor in her disappearance.
Police detective Michael Garcia said the investigation is continuing. He said police are still checking whether Harris was an escort.
"Regardless of occupation, race, whatever, we don’t discriminate against anyone," Garcia said. "When we consider someone missing, we do all we can to track them."
Gibides said Harris arrived on Oahu on May 7 and was last seen between 2 and 2:15 a.m. Thursday near Lewers Street and Kalakaua Avenue.
Gibides said she thinks Harris is being held against her will and hopes someone will provide leads to her disappearance.
