"Growing Medical Marijuana Securely and Legally," by Dave DeWitt (Ten Speed Press, $19.99, also e-book): Medical marijuana users in Hawaii may appreciate this beginner’s guide by food historian and noted horticulture expert DeWitt, adjunct associate professor in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University. The book features step-by-step growing and harvesting instructions, photos and recipes.
"I’ll Fly to Hawaii: A Century of Aviation," by Burl Burlingame (Pacific Monograph, $9.95): The former Star-Advertiser writer, now curator of the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor, has authored a well-researched and entertaining book about how aviation and Hawaii changed each other, starting with hot-air balloons over Kapiolani Park in the late 19th century through the islands’ long history with military and commercial flight. With a bonanza of historic photos, this 143-page, pocket-sized book will easily fit into a carry-on.
"The Lost Traveler Part I: Water Above," by John C. Nippolt (CreateSpace, $12.13): The surfing enthusiast and Kalani High School art teacher offers up the first of a planned fantasy trilogy following a secret group of surfing monks, masters of Shallow Temple (a play on "Shaolin"), and their battle against a vampiric alien threat.
"Trade Wind to Hawaii," by Robert T. Tanouye (CreateSpace, $7.25, also e-book): Tanouye, co-founder of the Honolulu Chapter of the National Writers Association, offers this fictional tale of two brothers who lead a royalist revolt against the Republic of Hawaii in the late 19th century.
"The Telephone Killer," by Paul J. Stam (Second Wind Publishing, $15.50, also e-book): The Kaneohe author writes about a detective who heads up a task force in search of a serial killer, only to have it get personal when his fiancee is abducted.
"Walking on Eggshells: Discovering Strength and Courage Amid Chaos," by Lyssa Chapman with Lisa Wysocky (Howard Books, $24.99, also e-book): "Baby Lyssa," 25, ninth child of Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman, tells of her hardscrabble life growing up with her mother (Chapman’s third wife) in Alaska, her teen pregnancy and reuniting with her famous father to work with him.
